Saturday 29th May 2010
Saturday 18th June 2011
This is an annual event which takes place in late May or early June
on the Saturday following Whit Friday.
Organised by the Saddleworth Round Table for the past 25 years or
so, it is a sponsored walk over 10 miles of hills, moors and villages
taking in 10 pubs. It attracts up to 1,000 entrants and raises up
to £50,000 for a variety of charitable causes.
The participants generally enter as groups rather than individuals.
What makes it such a good spectator sport is the fact that all walk
in fancy dress. Great imagination is shown in the creation of outfits,
which are often on a topical theme.
Spectators line the best vantage viewpoints, such as Uppermill High
Street, and are advised to come with their pockets full of small change
for putting in all the collection tins.
