The fact that Saddleworth has always existed as an isolated and independent community may contribute to the widespread interest in its local history. Considering its size, Saddleworth is fortunate to have an excellently maintained local Museum and passionate self-awareness of its important heritage.

The Roman settlements at Castleshaw, Saddleworth’s agricultural and industrial past, the cultural identity with traditional festivities and customs, personal reminiscences and archives of local families - all of these can be studied and discovered via the museum, historical society and sourced at local libraries.
