Uppermill
Uppermill is
today the central village of Saddleworth. The building of both the
turnpike road and the canal across Uppermill valley in the 19th
century meant that its growth and development overtook that of Dobcross
- until then the leading Saddleworth village.
Saddleworth
Parish Church, St Chads, is one of the oldest buildings in the area
and stands higher up the hill from the main village of Uppermill,
indicating the site of the original village settlement.
Uppermill is
the most extensive retail centre in the area. As well as shops serving
the local community with essentials, there are many arts, crafts
and gift outlets catering for the tourist industry. Many visitors
come at weekends, drawn by the specialist retailers, scenic high
street and attractions such as the canal, Museum and Art Gallery
and Brownhills Countryside Centre.
The number of
community facilities and venues in Uppermill means there is a constant
variety of events taking place in the village. Many of the local
interest groups take advantage of the Civic Hall, Museum, playing
fields, church centres and sports club to hold fund-raising and
social occasions - there need never be a lack of anything to do.
