The recreation
and entertainment to be found in Saddleworth is, rather contradictorily,
both traditional and yet all the more unusual for being so. In an
area shaped so much by its landscape, it is natural for many popular
local activities, such as walking and other sports, to be somewhat
timeless. Yet
it is the strength and continuity of many customs here which give
the area so much of its colour, and are unusual today because they
have died out in so many other places. The Whit Friday Walks, brass
band competitions, the Rushcart festival, traditional English dance
and folk music - all flourish here.
